Dimension W is a Japanese manga series created by Yūji Iwahara, who handled both writing and illustration. Square Enix first serialized it in the seinen magazine Young Gangan from September 2011 to November 2015, then moved it to Monthly Big Gangan from December 2015 until its conclusion in June 2019. Yen Press holds the North American license. The story follows Kyouma Mabuchi, a hobbyist auto mechanic, and Mira Yurizaki, a robot girl. Both work as "Collectors"—bounty hunters who confiscate illegal Coils, dangerous devices that tap into another dimension's power. Though reluctant partners, they uncover secrets about New Tesla Energy, the global electricity supplier. An anime television adaptation aired from January to March 2016.
The year is 2072, roughly a decade after the discovery of a fourth-dimensional axis called Dimension W. Cross-dimensional electromagnetic induction devices, or Coils, were invented to extract limitless energy from this dimension. New Tesla Energy and various governments built sixty giant towers worldwide, arranged in a truncated icosahedron pattern, to stabilize and distribute this energy globally. Coils now power everything from phones to vehicles and robots. However, unregistered Coils that don't report to New Tesla Energy are used illegally. Collectors hunt these devices. Kyouma Mabuchi, a Coil-hating loner, encounters Mira Yurizaki, the gynoid "daughter" of New Tesla Energy's ailing founder. When her father vanishes while activating an experimental double-ringed Coil, Mira joins Kyouma to follow the illegal Coils, uncovering shady dealings within New Tesla Energy.
Kyouma Mabuchi is a Collector who rejects all Coil-based technology, preferring to restore old gasoline-powered cars in a junkyard. He once served in the special-ops unit Grendel during a war over competing ideologies within New Tesla Energy, seeking an experimental prosthetic body for his terminally-ill fiancée, Miyabi. The war ended with Easter Island's destruction, but Kyouma lost both his memories of the battle and Miyabi during surgery due to a Coil malfunction. He now works as an independent contractor, hunting illegal Coils and their users. His weapons are throwing needles, which he also uses for travel. He is often seen driving a white Toyota 2000GT.
