Barakamon is a manga series created by Satsuki Yoshino, who handled both writing and illustration. It centers on Seishu Handa, a calligrapher who relocates to the isolated Gotō Islands off Kyūshū’s western coast, where he engages with the local residents. The manga debuted as three one-shots in Square Enix’s Gangan Powered magazine between February 2008 and February 2009, then began a regular serialization on the Gangan Online website that same month. From July 2014 through December 2018, it also ran concurrently in Monthly Shōnen Gangan, with a brief revival in that magazine from April to September 2023. The series was compiled into 19 tankōbon volumes.
A 12-episode anime adaptation by Kinema Citrus aired from July to September 2014. An 11-episode live-action drama produced by Kyodo Television followed from July to September 2023. A spin-off manga, Handa-kun, ran in Monthly Shōnen Gangan from October 2013 to September 2016, and received its own 12-episode anime adaptation by Diomedéa, which aired from July to September 2016. In North America, Yen Press has licensed both the original manga and the spin-off, while Funimation (now Crunchyroll) holds the licenses for both anime adaptations.

The series’ title comes from the local Gotō dialect, meaning “energetic” or “cheerful.” The first episode’s title, “Barakakodon,” translates to “energetic/cheerful kid,” referring to Naru Kotoishi, a hyperactive child who frequently visits Handa. The prequel spin-off Handa-kun depicts Seishu Handa’s high school years, six years before the events of Barakamon.
