Arakawa Under the Bridge is a manga by Hikaru Nakamura, who both wrote and illustrated it. The series ran in the seinen magazine Young Gangan from December 2004 to July 2015. Shaft produced a 26-episode anime adaptation that aired on TV Tokyo between April and December 2010.
The story follows Kou Ichinomiya, a young man raised to never owe anyone anything. After bullies steal his pants and he falls into the Arakawa River, a girl named Nino saves him. Unable to bear the debt, he asks how to repay her; she tells him to love her. This leads him to live under the bridge in Arakawa, a community full of eccentric outcasts society would call "denpa-san."
Kou, also called "Recruit" or "Ric" by the villagers, is a 22-year-old university student and heir to the Ichinomiya corporation. He suffers asthma attacks when he cannot repay a debt. He is highly educated, plays multiple instruments, and holds a black belt in karate. He builds his own apartment on a pillar under the bridge after learning the "villa" is just an empty pillar top. He works as the village teacher and is constantly baffled by the absurdity around him.
Nino, a mysterious girl who claims to be from Venus, becomes Kou's girlfriend. Her name comes from the "Class 2-3" tag on her sweatsuit. She is an expert swimmer and fisher, providing fish for the village. She lives in a cardboard home with a velvet bed but sleeps in a drawer beneath it. When scared or angry, she pulls her sweatsuit over her head and climbs a streetlamp.
The Village Chief claims to be a 620-year-old kappa, though he clearly wears a costume. He gives new residents names and must approve anyone moving in. His face changes when he runs fast, and he always drops out of the annual race. He tricked villagers into building him a villa underwater, claiming it was for a trip to Venus. He is deeply protective of Nino and has enough influence to stop Kou's father from destroying Arakawa. In serious moments, he removes his costume.
Hoshi is a 24-year-old singer who calls himself a superstar. He loves Nino and resents Kou for their relationship. Under his star mask is a moon mask, and beneath that is his real face with red hair.
