Lore & Background
The Conflict series began in 2002 with Conflict: Desert Storm, set during the Persian Gulf War. Players could choose to play as the British 22 SAS Regiment or the United States Army Delta Force. The sequel, Conflict: Desert Storm II (also known as Conflict: Desert Storm II - Back to Baghdad), released in 2003, continued the same setting and characters returning to Baghdad. Conflict: Vietnam (2004) shifted the setting to the Vietnam War and introduced new characters, leaving behind those from the first two games. Conflict: Global Terror (also known as Conflict: Global Storm) in 2005 returned to modern times and reunited the original characters while adding a new one. The final entry, Conflict: Denied Ops (2008), also set in modern times, brought back only Paul Foley from the previous game and introduced new characters.
Reader's Guide
The Conflict series represents a significant output of Pivotal Games, which developed all five instalments between 2002 and 2008. The franchise sold more than 6 million units, indicating a notable commercial presence in the tactical shooter market. Reviews for the individual games ranged from positive to negative, with most being mixed or average, suggesting the series maintained a consistent but not universally acclaimed quality. The series is notable for its varied settings—the Persian Gulf War, the Vietnam War, and modern conflicts—and for shifting character rosters between entries. The final game, Conflict: Denied Ops, was released in the same year Pivotal Games was closed (2008), marking the end of the series. The franchise's legacy is tied to the studio's history, which included acquisition by Kaboom Studios, financial struggles, and eventual closure after being sold to SCi Games.
